10 Easy Ways I Boost My Creativity
For creative individuals, few things are as frustrating as feeling like you've run out of ideas, or that your artistic output is stagnating. Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to jumpstart your creativity and get your imagination flowing again. Here are ten tips for boosting your creativity and reigniting your passion for your art.
1) Experiment with new mediums and techniques. If I enjoy writing first person, I’ll challenge myself to write in third person. If I find myself stuck typing at the computer, I’ll move to writing with a pen. Shifting how you do your art can open doors to new creative pathways and help you develop a unique voice.
2) Take a break from your art. Sometimes the best way I get creatively unstuck is to step away and go for a walk around your neighbourhood. Engaging in other activities that you enjoy may allow your mind to wander to new areas.
3) Surround yourself with inspiration. Fill your workspace with photos, artwork, quotes, and other things that inspire you. Attend art shows, concerts, and other events that showcase the kinds of creativity that resonate with you.
4) Sketch or jot down ideas as they come to you. I never leave home without my notepad and pencil, just in case a great idea strikes while I’m on the bus to work.
5) Collaborate with other creatives. Working with other artists, musicians, or writers can be a great way to expand your skills, learn new techniques, and develop your own style. And if you can’t collaborate with someone, open yourself up to other people’s art.
6) Learn a new language or skill. Studies show that learning something new can help improve cognitive function and enhance creativity. But be careful, don’t get caught up in it… You don’t want it to detract from what you’re trying to achieve. There are a lot of 1-2 hour, single day courses on things. Just try that - don’t commit to a 10 week pottery class that you have to do in your spare time. You need your spare time for something else…
7) Create a routine. Establishing a daily creative routine can help you develop discipline and focus, and make you more productive. Set aside a designated time each day to work on your art, and make it a habit.
8) Embrace the mundane. I get a lot of ideas when I’m washing the dishes.
9) Get out of your comfort zone. Take a trip to a new place, try a new food, or explore a different culture. Exposure to new experiences can stimulate your brain and inspire new ideas.
10) Embrace the dreaded first draft! It’s going to suck. But at least its now in front of you to edit, enhance, elevate. Just get it out of your head.
No matter what kind of art you practice, there will be times when your creativity feels stagnant. But by trying these ten tips, you can reignite your passion for your craft and find fresh inspiration. Remember, creativity is a muscle that needs exercise, so make it a priority to engage in activities that fuel your imagination. Embrace new experiences, explore new techniques, and stay open to inspiration from unexpected sources, and your creativity will thrive.
